Tremor, Spike's Father by DolphinMoana Tremor, Spike's Father by DolphinMoana
Well....I wanted to put him up anyway. In concordance with my recent pic of Silica, I bring you her mate, Spike's father, Tremor.

Tremor is ferociously protective of his family, sometimes to a fault, and it takes a long time to earn his trust. He's even suspicious of Spike showing up before he realizes he's his lost offspring.

But nah, he's a good guy. In fact, he was once one of the most revered and highest-ranked dragons in the "village". But for...reasons that connect to Spike's original separation from his family...that has flipped right over and Tremor is now quite despised around the dragon colony - except to his own mate and children.

Reminds me a lot of my own rendition of Spike's dad

I had seen yours once before, but I really tried not to look at it while making this so I didn't inadvertently copy anything from your design. But both yours and mine are pretty much based on adult Spike from Secret of My Excess, so they do kinda like alike. ^^;

Indeed. It's really not so strange that they look alike. I mean, it makes sense that people are going to say Spike probably looks like his dad. That'd be one horrifying mom if he looked like her during the events of SoME!
It also makes sense that people make Spike's dad green and the mother purple. Not only because when you do that, Spike isn't an exact copy of his dad. But also because most of us still want to make the mom the pretty one and the dad the tough one.

I made Spike's dad a drake: a land dragon. Because of this I can make him bulkier and tougher than other dragons. He's an anti-hero in my "fan-questria". He's big and mean looking and he's very grumpy. One could easily mistake him for an antagonist.
He says he doesn't care about family and he intimidates those who annoy him. He's also perfectly okay with the fact that he hunts other animals for food.
The truth is, that his almost Spartan upbringing made him really socially awkward and his pride took a huge blow when he couldn't protect his eggs.
Now he just wants to be left alone. He's a solitary guy and the type of guy that would watch over his loved ones from a distance, rather than sticking around within eye-reach.

Exactly! And purple is really a more feminine color, ergo ideal for the mother. Spike just can pull it off because he's small and cute.

I'm not really sure what you could call Tremor. He's not an anti-hero, but he's a bit of a rogue in his own right. He has wings, as you saw (I'm playing with the idea that Spike's mother has no wings, yet she is still able to fly like an Eastern dragon). He's a really good fighter and all, and was highly regarded in the village for a while. The dragon village where he lives with his family is in the middle of some weird weather and a shortage of food, and the village had set up a community food stash of sorts so that it can be rationed among everyone in the village.

Tremor's issue, though, was that he had a mate who was tired from having to eat for herself and three babies in the food shortage, and now there were two of those babies hatched and very hungry - and the third one soon to hatch any day. So he resorted to stealing from the community stash - a big no-no around the village - out of desperation to keep his family fed. He wasn't much of a fighter or hunter at that point, which he pretty sorely paid for when he was caught stealing and got those scratches on his face. Granted, this theft was for the sake of his family, but that's a pretty lame excuse around a dragon population. It was also the inadvertent result of this battle that Spike's egg was lost from the nest. And since he was caught stealing from the community, he is sorely frowned upon by everyone there besides his own family and becomes a bit of a recluse. And he does think it as his fault that Spike's egg went missing, so he's all the more uber-protective of his family, and especially when Spike finds them again. And his is not happy about this whole "son living with ponies" thing, and he has reasons for not liking ponies. The whole thing behind the food shortage is that since ponies find dragons too rare and scary to approach, his dragon village has not gotten the rain it had needed. And rain is a crucial part in the development of gems. :hmm:

You could call him an anti-hero as well. Just a different kind.

Long post ahead:

I haven't given Spike's father a name, so I'll refer to him as that: Spike's father. He's very proud and stubborn. He was raised to be tough. He doesn't talk about his feelings. His job is to guard his belongings, to protect and provide for his mate and his hatchlings, to teach the latter the skills they need in order to survive and to always stay stoic, because he's the man; he's the strong one; the very foundation on which his family rests, and he has to show strength when the others can't. That is his job; nothing less, nothing more either.

Spike's mother is a gorgeous young purple and pink dragoness with pearl white lethal fangs and slitted eyes like radiant emeralds. Her wings and lean posture allowing her snake-like movement in the air. Her graceful demeanor making her picture perfect, no matter what position she assumes. In other words: a breathtaking creature. Besides being astonishingly beautiful, she has a fervent personality to boot.

Spike's father admired her, but dared not approach her. Whenever he laid eyes upon her, he felt weak. He even refused to learn her name, or it would keep ringing inside his head like a bell. But when other dragons were after her, he decided it was time to claim what was his.
The interest was mutual, but Spike's father was awkward around his mate. Slowly but gradually, with some coaxing on Spike's mother's part, his loving nature started to show. To the outside world he was still the great, fearless alpha male, the example of what a real dragon should be. To his mate he had nothing to prove and he started questioning what his own father had taught him. That is until one faithful day a large group of wyverns* attacked. They were after their eggs. Spike's parents fought vigorously to protect the clutch, but were severely outnumbered. The wyverns managed to steal all of the eggs, leaving the two dragons devastated.

Spike's mother changed: the fiery dragoness was no more. Though she didn't actually die, her old self did. Spike's father's pride was shattered. He had one task as a father and he had failed to fulfill it, meaning he failed as a dragon altogether. He blamed his great loss on the fact he had grown 'soft' and was extremely angry with himself for allowing it to happen. Out of shame he left his mate and started wandering around aimlessly as a traveling recluse, going from cave to cave and living life one day at a time, with no real purpose.

*Wyverns: dragonesque beings with a set of wings instead of front legs, whereas dragons always have front legs. They are smaller and less intelligent than dragons. They also don't live as long. They are often confused for dragons by ponies and so dragons often get blamed for incidents with wyverns.

It almost seems like we could actually meld our two origin stories for Spike together into one uber-story. XD

For some reason, I can imagine Tremor sharing the same voice actor as Disney's Beast, Robby Benson. :)
